A quality code repository (also known as a codebase) should be found in every designer/developer’s toolbox. Code repositories are a spectacular way to track down, save, and organize code snippets for reuse or improvement. Here are a few sites we recommend that will help you do just this:
DevSnippets
DevSnippets is a blog-style repository that features a variety of scripts, snippets, and plugins for use. Each snippet is appropriately categorized. In addition, there are some great freebies and downloads available throughout the site.
GitHub
GitHub is quickly growing into one of the most well-known and well-liked repositories. GitHub adds a bit of a social networking aspect to the common repository and version control systems. GitHub features a variety of great tools including project/news feeds, developer profiles, commenting, inline editing, and secure/private repositories.
Google Code Search
Google Code Search is a great place to search through open source code and snippets. Google opens the door for you to browse and search through various repositories, open source projects, and more.
Krugle
Krugle features a nice search UI that allows users to quickly sift through open source repositories to locate open source code. Users can also share their own snippets and code just as quickly.
Smipple
Smipple offers the typical code sharing/organizing functionality you’d expect in a code repository… but with a social twist. Smipple is great for posting snippets and opening them up for dialog and comments.
Snippets Mania
Snippets Mania is a great site for posting and organizing your code snippets. Their repository currently features 34 different programming languages – Snippets Mania also offers commenting functionality… though it is fairly basic.
Snipplr
Snipplr offers the typical functionality expected out of an online repository – and so much more. Snipplr’s golden feature is its integration into TextMate. By using their TextMate bundle, you can browse through and contribute to their repository without even opening your browser.
Snipt
Snipt offers a nice AJAX interface for surfing through code snippets. In addition, they offer a convenient WordPress plugin that allows you to embed code quite easily.
Tipster
Tipster puts an interesting twist on code sharing… a 140 character limit, similar to Twitter. This means most tips are quick and simple. No nonsense, just interesting code snippets and advice.
